Gossip as a method is about giving value to all modes of conversation, to see the small talk, the chitchat or tittle-tattle, as holding equal potential for sharing information, creating discourse and analysing the world as other styles of communication. Gossip as a method is also a way of reclaiming what’s become a derogatory description of female activity. Interestingly, the origins of the word 'gossip' can be traced back to meaning a woman's female friend invited to be present at birth. Gossip is raw and honest, unedited and uncensored. It's the process. It's kitchen talk. It's not meant to be documented and is unrestrained by recording.
We are also interested in gossip as a form of oral tradition and transmission of knowledge that links to the idea of body as archive. It has the potential of catching what would otherwise fall in the cracks. In our talks programme 'Mellan stolarna' invited guests talked about safety, loss of language and right to a place.
